About numbering PDF pages
Page numbers are what make a printed document possible to talk about. Court filings, tender submissions, contracts and theses are usually required to carry them, and a merged PDF assembled from several sources almost never has a consistent set.
The numbers are drawn into the page as real text in a standard PDF font, so they are searchable and selectable, and they print exactly as they appear. Position, size and starting number are all yours to choose: a cover page can be skipped, and numbering can start at any value when the document is one part of a longer bundle.
“Page 3 of 12” counts the pages of the file you are numbering. If you are numbering parts of a bundle separately, use the starting number to keep the sequence running across the parts.
Questions about page numbers
Can I skip the cover page?
Yes. Tick “Leave the first page unnumbered”. Numbering then starts on page two, using your chosen starting number.
Can I start numbering at a different number?
Yes. Set “Start at” to any value, which is what you need when the file is the second part of a bundle and should carry on from where the first part ended.
Will the numbers cover up my content?
They sit in the margin, roughly a centimetre from the edge. If your page is already busy right into the corner, choose a different position or a smaller text size.
Are the numbers real text or images?
Real text, drawn in a standard PDF font, so they are selectable, searchable and sharp at any zoom level or print resolution.
Can I remove page numbers that are already there?
No. Numbers that are already part of a page are page content like any other, and removing them would mean editing the page itself. This tool only adds.
